CV

Hello! My name is Katie Deaven. Since 2024, I’ve been a Teaching Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Prior to my appointment at UNC, I completed my PhD in philosophy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. During the summers of 2022 and 2023, I was a Visiting Scholar at the Australian National University.

At UNC, I am developing philosophy courses that satisfy the Communication Beyond Carolina general education requirement, which center on the development of oral communication skills and reflecting on how information may be conveyed to (and discussed with) various audiences effectively. My research focuses on epistemological, metaphysical, and methodological questions that arise in the context of evolutionary biology and that connect to more general puzzles in the philosophy of science.

A Bit About Me

I was born and raised in northern New Mexico, which made me a lifelong lover of hiking and green chile.

Before moving to Wisconsin for graduate school, I received a B.A. in Philosophy and B.S. in Theoretical Mathematics at New Mexico State University.

Outside of philosophy, I enjoy growing and taking care of plants, cooking, biking, puzzling, and hanging with floofy (and less floofy, more scaly) friends!
